In 1976, a Federal government inquiry into the Australian Broadcasting System received 621 submissions from members of the Australian public interested in the problems, politics and future of the Australian media landscape. This article provides the first analysis of those submissions, using them to shed new light on Australian attitudes to their broadcast media and their public sphere in an era of rapid change. In particular, it focuses on attitudes to commercialism, public broadcasting, content quality and standards, diversity, and regulation, exploring the many different visions of media policy and politics that were articulated to the inquiry.
