Abstract “Serving with Pride and Dignity” (SWPD), the Women’s Army Corps’ traveling pageant, toured all 50 states from 1963 to 1969 with the intent to promote the Corps and improve its reputation with the American public. It combined the American history of women and war with the American history of fashion. The pageant offered a narrative that told the story of American women and the military, highlighting extraordinary women such as Dr. Mary Walker of the Civil War and Molly Corbin of the Revolutionary War. SWPD shows how the Women’s Army Corps celebrated soldiers’ femininity and sexuality, simultaneously unconventional in how women served in the past and conventional by reinforcing heteronormativity and femininity in contemporary soldiers. In an era associated with the burgeoning women’s rights movement, SWPD illustrated a particularly white, middle-class version of postwar femininity in the midst of the American public’s renegotiation of what it meant to be a woman. At the same time, “Serving with Pride and Dignity” celebrated women who defied those postwar conceptions and thus, this essay seeks to parse out the ways the Women’s Army Corps occupied the liminal space between rejecting and adhering to popular expectations of women.
