Nigel Wood

Abstract In October 2017 an advertisement appeared on ebay for an old cast-iron “double-cone” throwing wheel, thought to have been used by the potter William Staite Murray (1881–1962). Murray was a leading figure of the British studio pottery movement from the 1920s until 1940, when he left London for east Africa. The wheel was bought by the writer and researcher Nigel Wood, who trained originally as a potter. Study of the wheel’s possible history has helped to illuminate Murray’s original working methods and shown the important role that a power-wheel had played in the creation of his remarkable stoneware vessels and bowls.
