guard by the 1992 riot. Instead of honestly examining the causes of the violence, LAPD cast blame on Blacks and Latino/as and used the uprising further to augment the power of the police. Policing Los Angeles is an excellent study that should be required reading for anyone interested in late twentieth-century urban development and the expansion of police power. Felker-Kantor is wise to place LAPD, the nation’s third-largest police department in one of the most diverse cities in the United States, under a critical lens. His analysis of the ways in which LAPD targets communities of color, and how it successfully justifies doing so, is top-notch, and the amount of research that went into this book is truly impressive.
