“Three Sundays in a Week” is an interesting story by Edgar Allan Poe. Bobby, the narrator of the story, is eager to marry his cousin, Kate. Upon the consent of Mr. Rumgudgeon, Kate’s father, Bobby “shall have Kate and her plum” (“Three Sundays” 651), equal to “one hundred thousand pounds” in the 19 century (Mabbott 658). In addition, Mr. Rumgudgeon “would have given ten thousand pounds from his own pocket (Kate’s plum was her own)” (“Three Sundays” 653). Keen to manifest the great fortune, the narrator persistently badgers his uncle to pinpoint an “exact time.” “The old porpoise,” the narrator continues, finally settles the date. “Well, then, you shall be married precisely— precisely, now mind!—when three Sundays come together in a week!” (651). “Three Sundays in a week” is out of the question Bobby initially proclaims. The preposterous time, however, is realized by seafaring voyages. Bobby and Kate, with the assistance from two marine captains, ingeniously solve the predicament. Captain Smitherton, who “sail[s] from this position a thousand miles east,” is “one hour” earlier than London, and after his global voyage, he is “a day in advance of” London time. On the contrary, Captain Pratt navigates westward, and after a one-year voyage, he is “twenty-four hours or one day, behind the time at London” (656–57). Therefore, on October the tenth, they determine that “yesterday was Sunday” for Captain Smitherton, “today is Sunday” for Bobby, Kate and Mr. Rumgudgeon, and “to-morrow will be Sunday” for Captain Pratt (657). The mainstream criticism reads the tale as a romantic comedy. Thomas Olive Mabbott epitomizes this critical view. “This is his only tale that can possibly be read as a simple happy love story” and “its superficial comedy” accounts for the greater popularity with “ordinary readers than with professed critics” (648). Likewise, Mark Neimeyer interprets the comedy as “a story of love” (216). Also in the line of marriage, Richard Kopley detects personal innuendos in the story because Poe’s stepfather “cut him off without a shilling” (202). Similarly, J. Gerald Kennedy also perceives the “persisting resentment of the Foster father who had disinherited Poe” (77). Harry Lee Poe expands the
