Was Friedrich Max Müller a Vedāntist? This paper considers the significance for our view of Müller’s scholarly and personal beliefs of his sympathetic and sustained engagement with the Hindu philosophical tradition of Vedānta. Müller’s interest in the Upanishads as a student in the 1840s was rekindled in the last few decades of his life as he adjusted his personal and professional understanding of religion in response to a perceived crisis of religious doubt in late Victorian society. He looked to Vedānta as a possible source of inspiration for the adjustments he believed Christianity would have to make to survive in the modern world and to return at the same time to its ‘pure’ origins.
