This article compares and contrasts the life and career of Friedrich Max Müller (1823–1900) with those of the Semitic scholar William Wright (1830–1889), examining their relations with each other in the light of both scholarly publications and comments to be found in private letters of the period. From these it appears that tensions between Müller and some of his orientalist colleagues were due not only to different opinions in scholarly debates, but also to different conceptions of the role of scholars and the ways in which they should relate to the public.
