The work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) has been highlighted in this journal since 2005, and an introduction to the scheme can be found in previous reports. In 2016 18,483 objects dating to the post-medieval and modern periods were recorded by the PAS in 15,928 records. This represented 22% of all objects recorded; a 5% decrease in objects, but 1% increase in proportion, from 2015. The major functional categories (calculated by object) were: currency (coins and tokens) (37%), dress accessories (21%), arms and armour (8%), trade equipment (including jettons) (10%), vessels (5%), animal (including equestrian) equipment (4%), household fittings (4%). In the report for 2015 we noted a change in guidance whereby the PAS was being more selective in recording material datable after 1540, and the reasons for it. Of course, more recent artefacts of local importance continue to be recorded by the Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs), as do items of Treasure; both of these categories are represented in the objects highlighted below. From the above statistics it appears this change in guidance was not, at least in 2016, impacting the quantities or proportions recorded, though its effects will become clearer in future years. Sadly, it was while preparing this note that we learned of the untimely passing of our colleague David Williams, longstanding FLO for Surrey and East Berkshire. Though David was a published authority on late early-medieval metalwork, his expertise extended to all archaeological periods, to the incalculable benefit of his colleagues by whom he will be greatly missed. Indeed, David was a particular champion of post-medieval and modern finds, of significance locally to Surrey and more widely, many of which were published in previous editions of this report. A small measure of this lies in the fact that the pair of records cited alongside the dog collar published below were both David’s. As ever, many finds recorded in 2015 are both noteworthy and provide potential for further research, both into the objects and their context, and a few are highlighted and discussed here.
