In late June of 1706, members of the Picuris Pueblo sent a desperate message to the governor of New Mexico, Francisco Cuervo y Valdes. They were being held captive by the “savage Apache” on the great plains of eastern Colorado and western Kansas in an area known as El Cuartelejo and asked that for the love of God they should be rescued. In less than three weeks, Cuervo dispatched a rescue mission under the leadership of Sergeant-Major Juan de Uribarri. Uribarri was successful in returning the Picuris to their pueblo and kept a detailed diario (diary) of his entrada (entrance, journey). This document gives us daily information about his rescue mission. Details of cardinal directions and distances traveled are accompanied by descriptions of landmarks and especially water sources. In most cases he gives these landmarks names. Also in the diario are descriptions of flora and fauna, people encountered, and observations of the difficulties of travel through the mountains and onto the Great Plains. When he reached the Cuartelejo Apaches, he claimed the whole territory for Christianity and the King of Spain. Threatening with the power of Spanish armaments and horses, he negotiated a peaceful alliance with the Cuartelejo Apaches and the release of the Picuris Indians. While there is general agreement that El Cuartelejo was located north and east of Santa Fe, the exact location and the precise route of the Uribarri entrada has long been in dispute.
