ABSTRACT The question of how to support a group best in the sense of the person-centered approach (PCA) leads to a distinction between person and role, each with its own responsibilities. Role is not seen as an opposition to the person, but as an aspect of a person resulting from their social function. The condition between person and role is examined on the basis of the individual therapy setting and transferred to encounter groups. Questions about setting, resonance and directivity are raised. In addition, encounter groups are presented as occurrences that are woven into a wider social context in a variety of ways. Through reflective questions, insights into the relationship between person and role are extended to this social context in order to stimulate possibilities to facilitate the PCA in a broad way.
