ABSTRACT In February 2019 we hosted our first online Diploma training weekend. None of the participants were physically present to each other as they were in their own homes and connecting through an online meeting environment. Our training program is well known for the intensity that is created in an unstructured space where we are all physically present with each other. Therefore, the inclusion of an online weekend in the training program felt like risking our reputation, challenging our educational philosophy and potentially interrupting the developmental experience of our students. Thus, we embarked on our 16 hours behind a screen feeling a mix of excitement, resistance, and hope. In this article, we will describe the purpose and the environment of the online encounter group and our discoveries as a facilitation team, also exploring the implications for future facilitators working in this medium. We will discuss some of the learning from this experience including the possibility to facilitate multiple individual and group processes simultaneously, anti-oppressive facilitation, being hidden or hunted and finally the disinhibition effect on the group in this online environment. We also connect Rogers theory of actualization with John Suler’s writings about online benign disinhibition and the actualization of the self.
