I would like to dedicate this issue to Charles O’Leary who died in October, just after his article was printed in the first ‘facilitating encounter’ special issue. Charlie has been a central part of these special issues for me. When we, the editors, first released the call for papers inspired by the encounter experience at the PCE conference in Vienna in July 2018, Charlie was the first to respond, saying his article was nearly ready as he had already been compelled to write after his experience in Vienna. He submitted his paper shortly after and I was privileged to be the action editor for his paper, conveying the responses from peer reviewers and guiding him through resubmissions. While maintaining confidentiality on specifics, I would like to record some of this process here and the value of it for me. It feels important for me to say something about my experience of working with Charlie, as such a treasured member of the person-centered community and honor his extensive contributions to the person-centered community and approach over many decades. It seems ironic to me that someone who I initially was critical of for not being ‘personcentered enough’ turned out to be someone who embodied the philosophy of the person-centered approach more than almost anyone I have ever met. His ability to make me feel that I mattered in all my uniqueness through his warmth and appreciation was a gift that I will always treasure. I first met Charlie when he facilitated a workshop in Wrexham in the UK in 2012 on person-centered work with couples and families. I was only able to attend his evening brief lecture and discussion at which perhaps 100 people were present. My memory is hazy, but I have recollections of challenging Charlie for what I saw as his departures from a classical person-centered perspective to include systemic ideas, which at that time seemed to me to be inconsistent. He responded completely without defense, despite my attack. He was impossible to not like. I bought his book despite my theoretical reservations and intermittently have returned to it since to value his humanity and his theoretical contributions, such as bringing the systemic concept of ‘multidimensional partiality’ (Boszormenyi-Nagy & Ulrich, 1981, p. 178) to life in a person-centered way (O’Leary, 2011). I met him again in Vienna in 2018. He was a breath of fresh air for me in encounter, as his ability to be authentically present and contribute with both anger and a concern for others’ responses to him was remarkable. It was a joy to chat with him on the conference
