A Realistic and Radical Nonviolence Research

Chris D. Brown

Much contemporary nonviolence research has been subject to accusations of utopianism. Frustrated by the way in which nonviolence was routinely condemned as fanciful and futile, researchers have worked to re-shape how nonviolence is understood, emphasizing not its ethical dimensions, but its strategic and practical efficacy. Since devising this pragmatic foundation, numerous works have appeared which rigorously examine and substantiate, not just describe and assert, the power and potential of nonviolent action. In building this empirical base, nonviolent action (also called civil resistance) research has asserted itself in the social sciences, detailing and clarifying, through extensive qualitative and quantitative analyses, how and why it works better than violence, even in the most oppressive of contexts.
