I would like to begin by thanking Bergerbrant, Fahlander and Fowler for their considered and challenging responses to my article. Having read and admired their work for many years, it is a privilege to engage with them in this discourse. Unfortunately, space does not allow me to say all that I would like to in response to their commentaries, so I will limit myself to three broad areas. First, a brief clarification of some points raised in the article which have caused some confusion. Second, it is important to engage in a detailed discussionof scale, which has been an important element of each response. Third, takingFahlander’s lead, a consideration of what a burial does, particularly from a gendered and an aged point of view.
