On 6 and 7 December 2019, the 20th English in Southeast Asia (ESEA) Conference was held in Singapore at the Raffles Town Club, hosted by Ee Ling Low of the National Institute of Education, which is part of Nanyang Technological University. The ESEA is customarily held every other year, and the locale rotates among a consortium of the 11 prestigious founding universities in the region (see https://www.nie.edu.sg/our-people /academic-groups/ell/esea). I was part of a two-session panel which ran most of the morning on 7 December, entitled ‘Asian Contributions to World Englishes Theorizing’. The panel was organized by Ariane Borlongan (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies), Stefanie Pillai (University of Malaya) and Shirley Dita (De La Salle University, Manila). The organizers of the panel lined up a veteran team of scholars, all of whom have different or overlapping specialties, but who have also been active in exploring the World Englishes (WE) paradigm for the past several decades. These included broader theoretical papers by Anne Pakir, who worked closely with Braj and Yamuna Kachru early in her career, and Kingsley Bolton, currently co-editor of the journal World Englishes and in many ways the senior statesman among WE scholars today. The team also included wellknown contact linguist Lisa Lim, who offered her latest insights into language contact in Asia. The panel also benefited from insights fromMa. Lourdes Bautista, a major figure in WE, who co-authored the paper presented by Borlongan, providing a broad survey of the use of corpora in WE studies. Various linguistic and discourse features of Asian English varieties were also looked into, with phonology explored by Pillai, lexicography by Vincent Ooi, syntax by Robert Fuchs and intelligibility studies by Dita. Looking more into pedagogical issues, I presented a paper on English as a medium of instruction across the Concentric Circles in Asia, comparing Australia, Malaysia and Japan. The ESEA is a thought-provoking and high-quality conference, which still very much has a close family feel to it. The panel on World Englishes Theorizing represents just a small fraction of the three keynote speeches, one keynote panel and 150 individual papers, but I think it demonstrates thatWE theorizing inAsia is alive andwell, and quite vibrant. In a rare exception to the every-other-year tradition, the ESEA will be held again in late November 2020, hosted by Maria Luz. N. Elena Canilao at Ateneo de Manila University. I encourage those interested in Asian Englishes, including our contributing authors, to consider attending as a way to deepen and broaden your exposure to the latest research directions in our field.
