It is with heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and colleague David Graddol on 1 March 2019. David was an original thinker who approached linguistic and sociological data without preconceived notions of its meanings and brought a number of unique insights into the study of the futurology of English. He was an active member of the British Association for Applied Linguistics and is best known for two books published by the British Council: The Future of English (1997) and English Next (2006). David held a BA from the University of York (UK) and a PhD from Stockholm University (Sweden). From 2008 to 2012, David served as co-editor (along with Kingsley Bolton and Rajend Mesthrie) of the Cambridge University Press journal English Today, and in this post as co-editor he came to shape much of the future of discourse within the disciplines of World Englishes and applied linguistics. He remained, until his death in March, an active member of English Today’s editorial board. David is survived by his wife Margaret Keeton and their triplet daughters. Graddol (1997) offers an honest and unflinching examination of macro-sociolinguistics in the context of global and economic movements at the end of the twentieth century. Recognising contradictory trends – namely, the increase in the number of English speakers internationally and, at the same time, a growing importance of other languages – Graddol hypothesises about the likely roles of English in the future:
