Abstract

The goal of this spotlight series was to bring together scholars offering innovative ways of conceptualizing how culture shows up in human development. Here in the Conclusion, we argue that the six papers in this series overlap in their conceptualization of culture as a shared system that involves meanings. With these features in common, the papers then offer us four distinct frameworks for addressing how culture shows up in development. By providing alternatives to “cause-effect,” “positivist,” and “variable” approaches to studying culture and development that are common in psychology, we argue that these frameworks can improve applied developmental research. At the same time, we raise three issues that remain unaddressed by these frameworks—issues of cultural transformation, individual variations, and generalization. Attending to these issues would further augment our ability to address how culture shows up in development.
