ABSTRACT This article is a consideration of Feuerbach’s appropriation of Luther’s theology towards constructive ends. Special attention is given to the way in which Luther’s emphasis on divine promeity furnishes Feuerbach with philosophical resources to advance his claim that discourse about ‘God’ (theology) is ultimately discourse about ‘man’ (anthropology). Following a consideration of Feuerbach’s use of Luther, an account of Karl Barth’s efforts to respond to Feuerbach are considered. A final section argues that Feuerbach has misunderstood the systematic connections in Luther’s thought and that his efforts to present Luther as support for his provocative theological and anthropological claims are undermined by Luther’s contention that divine aseity provides the grounds for divine promeity.
