reinterpretation by non-elites. Critically, the book adds a welcome corrective to the scholarship on and of nation-building that omits micro-level interpretation of nation-building. The volume claims to address nontraditional approaches in nation-building in the second part, whereas the first six chapters deal with traditional approaches “in new ways” (p. 11). However, it becomes apparent that, while the last six chapters engage with nontraditional nation-building tools, the first six chapters would have benefitted from a greater engagement with the underlining, innovative ways explored by other authors in post-Soviet nationbuilding. Altogether, however, the volume is a timely encouragement to turn to an alternative view of nation-building and it sets out a definitive research paradigm for the postSoviet region that can clearly inform other aspects of area studies. The book will inspire students and researchers looking for innovative ways of thinking about nation-building and keen on re-thinking the “traditional” idea of nation-building.
