ABSTRACT This study explores some aspects of the life and career of John Fenton, vicar of Coleshill between 1538 and 1566. Apparently conscientious and diligent, he displays many of the characteristics of a professionalised priest of the 1630s almost a century before these became widespread. He came into occasional conflict with both his bishop and parishioners, while as an official of the archdeacon of Coventry he helped to enforce discipline on his fellow clergy and oversaw the introduction of religious changes. He was part of a reading culture among priests of the archdeaconry. He enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle while being both a prosperous and innovative farmer, employing progressive agricultural methods and practices long before they become widespread in the forest of Arden.
