is portrayed in Arabic fictional works, Casini interrogates the function of the European theme in these novels. He explains it in terms of “strategic Occidentalism,” as it served specific domestic goals, and it was tied to the author’s understanding of Egyptian national identity. The analysis of the novel Adīb as a parody of the intellectual quest for modernity and encounter with Europe is very effective, and it gives legitimacy and depth to a novel that has been neglected by Arabic literature scholars for a long time. While the theme of youth and Europe became integral parts of the Arabic literary canon, in the third part Lucia Sorbera (University of Sidney) explains that women’s literary production has long remained excluded from the literary canon (until the publication of Latīfa al-Zayyat’s novel al-Bāb al-maftūh in 1960), although Arab women had been very active in the cultural and political field since the dawn of Arab modernity. Therefore, Sorbera positions her research in the newly emerged field of gender studies in the Arab region, aiming at exploring the specificity of Arab women’s literary production. Drawing on a number of historical sources, Sorbera describes the biographical and autobiographical works of female literary pioneers such as ʿĀ’isha Taymūr, Mayy Ziyāda, Nabawiyya Mūsā, Zaynab Fawwāz, and Bāh ithat al-Bādiya. Sorbera argues that these life stories, far from dealing only with the authors’ private lives, had an important political and artistic function, as they contributed to the discussion about the “new woman,” which was central to the modernization process. Sorbera’s section is complementary to the first two sections, as it shows how the process of exclusion from the canon was tied to issues of gender and literary genre. However, the organization of the work in three different sections leads one to expect a formal conclusion, which in fact is missing. Such a conclusion would have allowed an elaboration of the differences and commonalities between the different themes and texts analyzed separately, especially between the canonical novels and the noncanonical texts written by women authors. The book complements a growing number of recently published studies that explore the Nahd a in the light of new theories and new research data. Seen as a contribution to this field, the book, like other relevant non-Anglophone publications, asserts the importance of looking beyond the (often rather narrow) limits of the growing “English-only” trend in our contemporary research landscape. The book will benefit scholars and students of Arabic literature and modern Arab history. In particular, it can be seen as precious teaching tool for Italian teachers of modern Arabic literature, as a monograph on Arab modern literary history in the Italian language has been long overdue.
