“As classless as the common cold”: Migration and Humanitarian Failure in Caryl Phillips’s A Distant Shore

Charged with ethical and political purpose, disassociated from traditional cosmopolitan detachment, and distanced from the naivety of post-Cold War cosmopolitan perspectives, post-9/11 literary cosmopolitanism offers a composite picture of the world that uniquely accounts for contemporary crises concerning forced displacement and humanitarian failure (Schoene 2–3, 27). As an emblematic work of cosmopolitan fiction Caryl Phillips’s A Distant Shore characterizes elite and non-elite migration as an integral aspect of the global world and the foundation of ordinary, vernacular, or underprivileged cosmopolitanism. Accordingly, Phillips’s cosmopolitan writing depicts the experience of migration through (hi)stories of anonymous masses of persecuted humanity across time and space. Bringing together temporally and spatially scattered lives of protagonists to whom history has dealt a difficult hand, Phillips creates a liminal community of the lost, the displaced, and the orphaned. Focused on problematic matters of belonging, identity, and persecution on ethnic, racial, gender, religious, or other grounds, and wary of the much-advertised ideas of multiculturalism and democracy, Phillips offers a repository of insightful narratives, each of which testify to humiliating local and global humanitarian failures. Most of these stories examine migration from Phillips’s characteristically polyphonic perspective, with the erasure of temporal and spatial boundaries highlighting the experience itself without decontextualizing it. This transcultural, indeed almost pan-historical, polyphony contests monolithic readings of migratory processes and “accounts for differences of viewpoint and interpretation” (King, Connell, and White xii). Phillips’s heterotopian community of outcasts shelters, among others, a fair number of refugees whose life stories have so far been read as refugee and asylum narratives but, curiously enough, not as cosmopolitan fiction. They go beyond narrowly postcolonial or Black British preoccupations to encompass theAfrican and Jewish diasporas in several historical frameworks, from the slave trade and persecution of Jews in Renaissance Europe to the present day.
