ABSTRACT Sources for the reign of Urraca of León-Castile (1109–26) include several chronicles written during and just after her lifetime, as well as three major chronicles from the thirteenth century. These latter three – the work of Lucas of Tuy, Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada and Juan of Osma – date from the era of another ruling queen, Berenguela of Castile (r. 1217–46). They therefore offer a rare portrayal of one powerful queen written by close associates of another. This paper compares the depiction of Urraca in twelfth- and thirteenth-century narrative sources, concluding that the thirteenth-century authors used Urraca to convey beliefs about rulership that were shaped by their historical moment. Rather than seeing their descriptions of Urraca as rebukes of a woman who sought authority free of masculine oversight, we might more properly consider them as arguments for the legitimacy of Berenguela’s son and co-ruler, Fernando III of León-Castile.
