anecdotes. The authors, while recognising the diversity of situations and stressing the importance of preventive conservation, reflect on the possible causes of deterioration in some works and their eventual need for interventions to be made, including measures to maintain both supports and pictorial surfaces. This section constitutes a useful summary to be consulted with the rich appendix that follows with a focus on the stretchers, canvas, gesso preparations, paints and binding formulations that Francis used, enabled by the analyses undertaken by the Sam Francis Foundation and the Getty Conservation Institute. As the authors report, the research brought to this dense publication is necessary to provoke awareness on the conservation challenges posed by the diversity of materials used by Francis in a career that produced over 1900 paintings and thousands of works on paper, made in his various far-flung studios and now spread further across the world in various public and private collections. These challenges are an opportunity to get to know his oeuvre through the research presented here where diverse perspectives are perfectly integrated. This is why the book is also highly recommended for both art history and conservation students, as it is exemplary in presenting its multifaceted research through the use of a fascinating narrative. It is impossible to carry out scientific analysis alone on an artwork without consulting any art historical sources, and it is also impossible to limit art historical research to studying the visual effects of what we see, without understanding anything of the materiality of the artwork, and what makes this book special is the way it presents this alchemy between science and poetry.
