The author overcame this issue by constructing a digital model of the building (the genesis and rationale of which are clearly explained in the Appendix A), based on a rich corpus of visual and written sources. Most importantly, this includes the surveys produced by Andrea Alippi for Nicolai’s monograph (1815) and the sketchbooks by Virginio Vespignani, an architect working on the nineteenth-century reconstruction of the church, which contain precious drawings of the excavations conducted around the apostle’s tomb.
