ABSTRACT The Northeast Region of the National Park Service (NPS) is responsible for the preservation of over 36 million artifacts. These cultural resources, accessioned as individual items, are divided between distinct NPS collections. Each Park manages how their artifacts are narrated, displayed, and conserved, so that they adhere to the Park’s period of significance and to the mission statement of the NPS. In treatment, NPS conservators consider each Park’s collection as a whole in tandem with the intent of the creators of those collections. This approach may appear to be at odds with the AIC Code of Ethics, which supports an artist’s intent as a primary driver in the interpretation and contextualization of a work, but conservation decision making processes are nuanced, as shown by the three case studies presented within this paper about: a Japanese screen owned by Laurance Rockefeller, an altar table owned by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and a set of whale jawbones at the home of Captain Edward Penniman. These case studies are useful in describing the challenges faced by NPS conservators in balancing the mission statement of the National Park Service with AIC’s Code of Ethics and negotiating the material value of America’s cultural treasures.
