In Re McLaughlin [2018] UKSC 48, the UK Supreme Court held the blanket exclusion of unmarried cohabitees from a bereavement benefit in Northern Ireland incompatible with the non-discrimination provision in article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights, read with article 8 (the right to respect for private and family life). While Lady Hale delivered the leading judgment, Lord Mance summarised the four-toone decision most succinctly:
