ABSTRACT In this paper we examine the influence exercised by popular action on the political system of the Crown of Castile’s Cantabrian possessions in the late Middle Ages. Working from a mixture of municipal records, lawsuits preserved in the Royal Chancery Archive in Valladolid, chronicles and historical literature we will attempt to do the following: identify the protagonists of said popular political action, examine the basis of their political discourse, advance in our understanding of their political organisation, and evaluate the consequences of their activity.
