ABSTRACT The discipline of communication has contributed a number of theories and models to the study of humor. The purpose of this paper is to review seven of those approaches: Gruner’s ‘laughing = winning theory,’ du Pré’s surprise liberation theory, Meyer’s rhetorical functions of humor, Lynch’s model of organizational humor, Miczo’s security theory of humor, DiCioccio’s interactionist model of teasing, and Wanzer, Frymier, and Irwin’s instructional humor processing theory. The review emphasizes theoretical and conceptual foundations, supplemented with empirical research where feasible. Following the review, strengths and limitations of humor research in the communication discipline are offered.
