“haunted by the ecological footprint of human presence” (14). The same could be said of any of Montgomery’s places, real or imagined. That is precisely whatmakes this collection sowelcome. Aswe confront the crisis of our age—as the shore of Montgomery’s beloved Cavendish crumbles into the Gulf—we need to engage literature as part of fabric of the environmental ethics, material practices, and inherited values. The beauty of nature was at the core of Montgomery’s writing. Her world was one of diverse harvests, community support, and, crucially, an acceptance of limits. This is a pattern to seek.
