Archival analysis of more personal accounts, which are largely absent here, may have helped to illuminate the contemporary preoccupation with health and disease and personified its victims. Likewise, race is addressed within the context of an evolving white interpretation of immunity, but more could have been done to illustrate the realities of what it meant to be excluded, subjugated, or enslaved in Orleanian society. That black slaves, and later freedmen and women, were considered to possess inherited resistance to the disease is deftly stated, but the impact such categorization had on their lives is slightly less apparent. Greater engagement on this front may have allowed for a more detailed exploration of the intricacies and variety of African and African American experiences and responses to yellow fever, both in New Orleans and in the surrounding sugar parishes. Despite these criticisms, Yellow Fever, Race, and Ecology is an ambitious and insightful book that does much to further the contention that studies of race and ecology can benefit from mutual consideration.
