Marshallese Language and Diaspora

This section on Marshallese language provides a series of interviews of a diverse group of Marshallese community members in Springdale, Arkansas, who share their thoughts on challenges related to language, its transmission, and Marshallese orthography. As these interviews demonstrate, the Marshallese language functions in diaspora in ways that confound Western binaries that pit preservation against change. As Marshallese continue to relocate to the United States from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, an archipelago of 29 low-lying atolls and five islands in the central Pacific, community members increasingly express concerns over language and culture loss. Some Marshallese feel that their written language is a cultural manifestation of their Christian culture and learning the language in its relational spoken context is of primary importance.
