Charting New Paths for Critical Hmong American and Diaspora Studies

Like the socially constructed identity of Asian American, Hmong American is a political identity.1 Hmong Americans’ historically asymmetrical relationship with the United States government and their contemporary experiences as a racialized ethnic minority group have much in common with the experiences of other Asian and Southeast Asian Americans. At the same time, Hmong Americans’ relationships with the peoples and government of their “homeland,” with the U.S. and its political institutions, and with racial categories and ethnic groups in American society are unique and complex. Hmong American and diaspora studies is a space for engaging in certain social inquiries into these complex relationships and praxes toward creating just and equal relationships. Specifically, we see Hmong American and diaspora studies as a space within ethnic studies to interrogate authority (knowledge, power, subjugation), cultivate political identities, and develop Hmong’s capacity for collective action. In this introductory essay, we begin by discussing the impetus for this special issue. Next, we discuss the current state of Hmong American and diaspora studies before highlighting how the
