abstract Sexual violence against men particularly by other men is relatively unreported in comparison to violence against women. This study focuses on the interaction between poverty and violence in the life of a young gay post-graduate university student (Mvelo*) by exploring his lived experiences. Mvelo engaged in sexual relations with other men in return for money or other material benefits. It was also common for him to get into risky sexual situations under the influence of alcohol. Mvelo subscribed to the widely held notion that sexual violence only impacts women. He did not consider himself to be a victim of sexual violence despite having had non-consensual intercourse with a number of sexual partners. Mvelo preferred to describe these experiences as manipulations or tricks rather than violence or force. There is a need for further research to bring awareness to key issues of sexual violence against men as well as violence within LGBTIQA relationships.
