the use of tools and other objects, the emergence of cultural complexity, and the transmission of learnings, in a feed-back loop that enables a ratcheting effect in social innovation. This looping feedback involves not only society, but also the ecological context, and human neurobiology. Social niche construction is key to understanding the social-cognitive development of humans, their interaction with the physical/biological world, their ratcheting culture, and their capacity for symbolic thinking, all of which finally sets the scene for the emergence of language. In this way, then, social niche construction provides the foundations for a scientific account of the evolution of wisdom, understood as the capacity to make complex decisions in navigating social networks and dynamic niches in human communities. This study emerges from two major Templeton funded research projects at the Notre Dame Centre for Theology, Science, and Human Flourishing, and more immediately from a research conference at the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University (2016). The contributors are a good mixture of experienced and younger scholars, many of them coming from quite specialised scientific perspectives. I found myself looking for more theological work on God, Creator and Saviour, in relation to the evolutionary perspectives, something Deane-Drummond begins to take up in the penultimate chapter. But I found this book led me into new territory as a theologian, asking new questions, and I am grateful for it.
