In the present work, the effect of pre-strain and number of shape memory alloys on the compressive performance of glass/epoxy composite conical shells were studied. The filament-winding process was applied to manufacture the composite specimens, without and with 1 and 2 SMA wires of 0, 1, 2 and 4% pre-strain. Based on the results of the axial compression tests, the maximum stiffness was obtained in the specimen with no SMA wires. Besides, the specimen with 1 SMA wire and 4% pre-strain exhibited the highest level of the compressive load-bearing capacity, which is attributed to the transformation of austenite to twinned martensite (shape memory effect) due to the higher value of pre-strain. Finally, scanning electron microscopy was conducted, and it was found to be consistent with the results of the compression tests on the specimens.
