Improving the enzymatic digestibility of alkaline-pretreated lignocellulosic biomass using polyDADMAC

Using cheap additives to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis and lower the enzyme dosage proves to be an effective way to bring down the lignocellulose conversion cost. When poly-diallyl-dimethyl-ammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) was added in alkaline pretreatment of different lignocelluloses, it did not improve the delignification but significantly enhanced the succeeding enzymatic hydrolysis. The corn stover pretreated with polyDADMAC showed an increase of 18.4 % and 21.8 % in glucan and xylan digestibility, respectively. PolyDADMAC addition also increased the glucan and xylan digestibility of alkaline-pretreated switchgrass by 17.7 % and 12.1 %, respectively. For lignin-free cellulose, the glucan digestibility increased by 31 % with polyDADMAC treatment. The boost effect was because of the disruption of cellulose fiber by polyDADMAC, rather than the removal of lignin. SEM images of pretreated samples showed caustic pits on the surface by etching with polyDADMAC, which facilitated the enzyme accessibility. The crystallinity of treated samples decreased while the surface area, pore size, and pore volume increased with polyDADMAC.
