Photoinduced molecular reorientation of a liquid crystalline polymer with a high birefringence

A photoalignable liquid crystalline (LC) polymer comprised of phenyl benzoate with a Schiff-base end moiety is synthesized and its thermally stimulated photoinduced reorientation behavior is investigated using linearly polarized (LP) 365 nm light. A significant in-plane reorientation (D>0.8) is achieved. The reoriented film exhibits a high birefringence (Δn=0.28) and a high thermal stability (~295 °C). Re-exposure of the reoriented film to LP 365 nm light reversely changes the orientation direction. However, the initial reoriented structure is recovered by re-annealing.
