Vladimir Evgenevich Fortov (January 23, 1946–November 29, 2020)

Plasma physics has lost one of its most prominent and influential representatives, Vladimir Evgenevich Fortov, who passed away on November 29 after a short severe illness. Vladimir Fortov was highly recognized in the scientific community. He is author and co‐author of more than 900 scientific papers and 30 monographs, which demonstrates his enormous impact on the field. He received numerous awards for his outstanding work, among them the prestigious Bridgman Prize in high‐pressure physics, the Hannes Alfvén Prize in plasma physics, the Max‐Planck award for physics, and the George E. Duvall Shock Compression Science Award of the APS. He holds honorary doctorates from 10 universities, including the universities in Rostock (2006) and Frankfurt (2010).

Vladimir Fortov made major contributions to the field of plasma physics and matter at high pressure. He developed many original experimental methods, including compression by shock waves and detonation waves and pneumatic and electrodynamic accelerators, as well as compression with lasers and electron and ion beams. He performed in‐depth studies of the thermodynamic, transport, and chemical properties of dense non‐ideal plasmas, including many studies of the metal–insulator transition. Moreover, he was actively engaged in the research on dusty plasmas and astrophysics, including research on the International Space Station (ISS).

Vladimir Fortov was director of several institutes of the former Soviet Academy of Sciences and, later, of the Russian Academy, particularly of the Joint Institute of High Temperatures in Moscow. In the 1980s, he initiated a close collaboration between institutes in the former Soviet Union and the former German Democratic Republic in the field of “Energetics.” Particularly close collaborations emerged with the universities in Rostock, Greifswald, and the Humboldt University Berlin. It is largely due to Fortov that this programme could be continued very successfully on a much broader topical scale after 1990 between Russia and Germany, now extending to additional universities such as Frankfurt and Kiel and also to various Helmholtz Centers and Max Planck Institutes. Vladimir Fortov was one of the founders of the conference series on the “Physics of Nonideal Plasmas (PNP),” which started in 1980. This conference series is still active today, serving as a platform for intense discussion on fundamental physical problems in the field of dense non‐ideal plasmas and promoting an intense collaboration between experimental and theoretical groups. One of the highlights in this series was the 13th PNP conference organized by Vladimir Fortov and colleagues in Chernogolovka in Russia in 2009.

Aside from scientific excellence, Vladimir Fortov was active in the support of science in Russia, and he was willing to take over political duties, particularly during the difficult 1990s. He served as Minister for Science and Technology in 1997–1998 and was Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation in 1996–1997. Furthermore, Vladimir Fortov was Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1996 to 2001 and President of the Academy in 2013 to 2017. For many years, Vladimir Fortov served as Deputy Head and Head of the National Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Affairs. For his service, he was awarded the Einstein Gold Medal of UNESCO for Achievements in Science and International Collaboration in 2005.

Vladimir Fortov's scientific ideas have been picked up by many and will continue to live on in the non‐ideal plasma physics community. We express our sincere condolences to the family of Vladimir E. Fortov and to our Russian plasma physics colleagues.

弗拉基米尔(Vladimir Evgenevich)Fortov(1946年1月23日至2020年11月29日)
