Human activities and natural weather keep driving the spatiotemporal migration and dynamic equilibrium of soil organic pollution. Our study shows that a super typhoon can dramatically change the organic pollution characteristics in agricultural soils over a short period of time, mainly through a change in soil properties such as soil organic matter and soil moisture. The finding was verified by an intensive study of the influence of super typhoon Lekima in the Yangtze River Delta of China. The typhoon significantly increased by 56% and 10% the contamination levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalic acid esters in 0–20 cm soils and decreased by >57% the levels of organochlorine pesticide and polychlorinated biphenyls, respectively. Our study provides a sharp contrast to the conventional wisdom that soil organic contamination remains relatively steady for a long period of time. This study confirmed the sharp disturbance of soil organic pollution by a super typhoon and elucidated the drivers and mechanism.
