We are very pleased to have this opportunity to introduce ourselves as the new editorial team, and to share with you our vision for the journal over the coming years. We would like to begin by thanking the outgoing editorial team, comprising Janet Boddy, Sara Bragg, Wendy Sims‐Schouten and Rachael Stryker, for their highly skilled leadership in growing and developing the journal and its audience over the last 4 years. We particularly note their willingness to push the boundaries of theoretical developments in childhood studies in their themed section on The Future of Childhood Studies and Children & Society (Stryker et al., 2019). They have left us with big boots to fill.

Our arrival on the journal comes during highly challenging times globally, with the Covid‐19 pandemic, the climate crisis and widening socio‐economic inequalities. A global reckoning with sexual misconduct and racial injustice as witnessed in the #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter movements has both challenged and inspired research and activism in raising awareness of the pernicious effects of inequalities. This raises important questions about the relationship between significant events in society and children’s lives: what do these movements teach us about childhood and what does the study of childhood teach us about these movements? Now, more than ever, there is a pressing need to ensure that the voices and lives of children are well represented across research, policy and practice. During these times, we will endeavour to continue the mission of making Children & Society a key resource for practitioners, policy‐makers and scholars seeking an understanding of children and young people in contemporary societies and the issues that affect their lives.

Our editorial team brings together international, interdisciplinary and cross‐generational perspectives on children and childhood studies, comprising: Sarah Crafter and Martin Robb from The Open University, Deevia Bhana from the University of KwaZulu‐Natal, Yuwei Xu from the UCL Institute of Education and Liam Berriman from the University of Sussex. Our interdisciplinary backgrounds cover a range of fields of study, including: cultural studies and digital childhoods (Berriman); gender and sexuality studies (Bhana); critical‐developmental psychology and children’s migration/immigration (Crafter); social care and childhood and youth studies (Robb) and early childhood studies (Xu).

While our primary goal as editors will be to continue to maintain the quality and international reputation of the journal, we would also like to briefly share with you a vision and plan for developing the journal in the coming years. This includes: (1) a commitment to further internationalising and diversifying voices within the journal, and (2) developing new ways of engaging with the journal’s audiences.

(1) Internationalisation and diversification. The study of children and childhood is an international and interdisciplinary field, made up of a global community of scholars. One of the challenges for the study of children and childhood has been the need to dismantle Western centrism, which has resulted in the marginalisation of Global South perspectives. Across a range of disciplines, there has been a growing movement towards decolonisation, with calls for a diversification of voices and an acknowledgement that not all work is recognised equally within the field. As gatekeepers, journals play an important role in determining whose work is represented in a field of study. English‐language journals are among the most cited in the world and are a key means for both native and non‐native English speakers to have their work read by an international audience. The previous editorial team made great strides in improving the international scope of the journal, and one of our priorities will be to build on and extend this work. Our aim is to continue to extend the journal’s coverage beyond Europe, North America and the Anglophone world, to other key regions of the world, such as the Asia‐Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and South America. We will also seek to promote diverse representation of scholarship and knowledge from different parts of the world and especially in underrepresented regions, such as the Global South. As an international team, we are acutely aware of the challenges faced by writers with English as an additional language, and we are committed to exploring how we can continue the work of internationalising and diversifying Children & Society to reflect the global field of study. We will be exploring how we can provide further support to writers from diverse linguistic backgrounds, and we will be actively encouraging special issue proposals on topics that specifically address issues of relevance to underrepresented regions of the world.

(2) New ways of engaging audiences. Children & Society is a unique publication that seeks to speak not only to the academic field of childhood studies but also practitioners and policy makers. The special relationship between the journal and the National Children’s Bureau means that policy reviews continue to be a key part of the journal’s identity, alongside our regular research articles. We will be seeking out a greater range of international and comparative perspectives in the policy section of the journal, whilst ensuring that the policy reviews remain relevant to practitioners and policy‐makers in the UK. The rapid pace of information sharing brought about by digital technologies has created new challenges for journals and other traditional routes to publication. Social media have become a means of rapidly disseminating research findings, while peer‐reviewed articles can take months to reach audiences. In the first months of our tenure as editors we plan to review how our journal engages with readers beyond our existing publication strategy. We still believe that peer‐reviewed articles are the gold standard for academic work. However, we also recognise that this sometimes presents a challenge to our responsivity to rapidly changing events in the lives of children. Our aim is to develop a journal blog where ‘rapid response’ pieces can reach audiences more quickly. These will provide a stepping stone towards fuller peer‐reviewed articles and potential special issues. We are also hoping to revive the journal’s podcasts as a means for authors to share their articles through short interviews with the journal’s editors, which in turn will provide another means for readers to access and engage with the journal.

We would like to conclude by thanking you, the readers, reviewers, authors and Editorial Board members of Children and Society, for your work in supporting the journal’s ongoing success. We remain committed to the fundamental position of the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) upon which this journal was founded, and that is to remain faithful to understanding the rich, complex and changing relationships between children and society. We hope you will join us for this next exciting stage in the life of the journal, and we greatly welcome any feedback you have that can help us to grow and develop the journal going forward.
