This paper deals with the existence and nonexistence of positive radial solutions of the elliptic equation $\left\{\begin{array}{l}-\mathrm{\Delta }u=f(|x|,u),u\in \mathrm{\Omega },\\ u{|}_{\mathrm{\partial }\mathrm{\Omega }}=0,\end{array}\right.$ where $\mathrm{\Omega }=\{x\in {\mathbb{R}}^N:r_1<|x|<r_2\},N\ge 3$ and $f\in C\left(\right[r_1,r_2]\times {\mathbb{R}}^{+})$, whose sign may change. We present new eigenvalue criteria for the existence and nonexistence to this problem. The discussion is based on the fixed point index theory in cones.
