he first issue of Library Quarterly was published in 1930, a couple of years after the commercial sensation The Jazz Singer ushered in the era of movies with sound and just T 1 year after the release of Broadway Melody, the first movie musical. Talkies, as they were initially known, brought dialogue, music, and singing into film, greatly expanding the palate and expressiveness of film. Inspired by the proximity of these two debuts, in our final two editorials of this anniversary year, we will explore the sometimes parallels—and sometimes lack thereof—between the films that feature libraries or librarians and the themes that dominated the contemporaneous pages of Library Quarterly. Reflecting the numerous roles of and widespread familiarity with libraries in society, libraries and librarians not surprisingly feature in a great many films and television programs. The prevalence of librarian characters in films is reflected in how many of these parts were available for leading actors; Bette Davis, Gloria Grahame, Goldie Hawn, Greer Garson, Katharine Hepburn, Shirley Jones, Donna Reed, and Rachel Weisz are all Oscar winners who played librarians in the films discussed herein. Although often a character’s designation as “librarian” seems to have little impact on a film’s plot, such as Greer Garson’s character in 1945’s adventure yarn appropriately titled Adventure or Goldie Hawn’s character in 1978’s comedy/murder mystery Foul Play or Renee Russo’s character in 1989’s Major League, in a wide variety of films, libraries and librarianship are actually central to the plot and the message of the film. One entire book has been devoted to the topic of portrayals of librarians in the cinema of the twentieth century (Tevis and Tevis 2005). The authors, Ray Tevis and Brenda Tevis, focus primarily on the ways in which the librarians are presented in film, such as age, attire, and
