Kathryn Masten

To ensure that new librarians are prepared to support social innovation, defined as the application of new approaches for increasing community knowledge creation to improve society, library schools need to explicitly include social innovation in their courses. This article presents a “purpose + values + process + textbook” framework for course design that was used successfully in an introductory information and communication technology course, culminating in socially innovative technology plans to support underserved populations. Infusing social goals and rewarding experimentation throughout courses can empower and energize library students to prepare for managing their own libraries as social innovation hubs.
