Collaboration of the Heart: The Forbidden Love Affairs of French Prisoners of War and German Women in Nazi Germany

The German victory in the West in 1940 brought 1.5 million French prisoners of war (POWs) to Germany. Given that Germany and France had signed only an armistice, not a peace treaty, Germany did not release its prisoners but deployed them as laborers throughout the entire territory of the Reich. The fact that Vichy France was a friendly neutral and that the French army, with the exception of the small Free French forces, was no longer fighting Germany made it possible to disperse French prisoners among the German working population with less supervision than, for example, British prisoners. Worried about the proximity of so many foreign men to German women, however, the Nazi regime severely penalized amorous contacts between POWs and German women, especially as the growing manpower demands of the German army depleted factories and villages of German men.
