I couldn’t help wonder if the interpretation hadn’t somehow outpaced the available evidence. Any reservations aside, Itineraries of Power has much to recommend it to those interested in Heian and medieval Japan across a range of disciplines—this short review has barely scratched the surface of the rich and provocative material explored throughout the book. Depending on one’s interests, each of the chapters could easily stand alone. While Ka wa shima’s lucid historical explanations contextualize each chapter for a broad audience, her sophisticated literary analyses incline the text toward a more specialized readership. Either way, Itineraries of Power makes a welcome and thought-provoking addition to our understanding of Japanese cultural history and of the texts that enable that understanding.
