so, there is danger in discussing a particularized Japanese phenotype, for in making this point there is the potential risk of perpetuating the very myth that Suzuki and many others are motivated to debunk. By saying that the zainichi “look like Japanese” are we not perpetuating the homogeneous Japan thesis? There are real social outcomes that result from discourses of homogeneity, and in framing our arguments we adopt language that recognizes these realworld consequences, but we need to be careful in qualifying our discussion to include and recognize the diversifying face of contemporary Japanese society. Such an approach would further contribute to change and recognition.
