approaches. Whatever emotional or ideological attitudes one might have toward the dominance of English as an international and global language, one is reminded by Karen Grimwade’s excellent translation that there is much to commend about making these perspectives available in the current lingua franca. Future translations from Chinese, Korean, Russian, and other perspectives will only enrich our understanding of the complexities of Japanese history and of the many ways in which this history continues to impact our understanding of the region. Ultimately, they will help refi ne our comprehension of that terrible and destructive war, as Lucken’s book has masterfully done.
