Yet, I wonder if the author, and his readers, especially those new to the fi eld, might have been better served by two books. In a true survey history, Kuitert, the enormously well-read garden historian, might have presented his profound knowledge of the social history of modern Japanese gardens without having to elevate naturalistic gardens that evoke the rural countryside by denigrating the manicured and abstract ones. In a separate book, a shorter manifesto, Kuitert, the concerned landscape architect, might have argued how the long evolution of natural and naturalistic Japanese garden styles present compelling examples of built environments carefully calibrated to satisfying the demands of place making and patron pleasing.
