When a group of young Tunisian men from Redeyef found themselves stuck in the temporary migrant detention center of southern Italy’s island, Lampedusa, in October 2017, “in very difficult humanitarian conditions” and threatened with being expelled back to Tunisia, they announced with a public letter that they were going on hunger strike “against deportations and for the freedom of movement,” asking for international support.1 In this letter they explicitly connected their choice to migrate north to political and economic failures at the national and international level. As a result of this failure, they concluded, “We’ve had to abandon our dream of 2008 of a democratic state guaranteeing freedom, dignity, and social justice.” The men who wrote that letter were in fact some of the protagonists of the 2008 uprising in the mining region of Tunisia, which former Tunisian dictator Ben Ali violently repressed, with the Army besieging the city of Redeyef for over six months and arresting and torturing many local protesters. Writing this international call, spread by the Tunisian Forum pour les Droits Economiques et Sociaux (FTDES), these young migrants asked to be released and to move freely, calling an international audience to express solidarity with them.
